Taraji P. Henson won a NAACP Image Award on Friday night and used her acceptance speech to sound a clarion call for the African-American acting community.
The Empire star was named Outstanding Actress In A Drama Series at the ceremony that recognizes 'the accomplishment of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film.'
Referencing the 'Oscarssowhite' controversy, the 45-year-old declared: 'We don't need to ask for ask for acceptance from ANYONE. WE are enough.'

She seemed to be urging her peers not to let themselves and their community be defined by the controversy surrounding the lack of recognition of African-American performers at the upcoming 2016 Academy Awards.

Her co-star in the show Terrence Howard received a standing ovation, too, as he won Outstanding Actor In A Drama for his performance as patriarch Lucius Lyon.
The actor, 46, who found fame in the film Hustle & Flow, also had a message.
'We have a privilege as black human beings to do beautiful things in this world,' he told the audience.
It was a big night for Empire which also picked up the Outstanding Drama Series.

Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett were among the heavy hitters who came out to support the event.
Jada, of course, recently made headlines with her announcement that she would not be attending the Oscars this year in protest at her husband not getting a nomination for his role in the movie Concussion.
But while Will, 47,was nominated for the NAACP Outstanding Actor Award, it just wasn't his night.
Instead, young actor Michael B. Jordan, 28, the star of Creed, was the winner, thanking his parents in an emotional speech for their support.

Michael also revealed his amazement at even being considered for an award.
'I thought it was a typo that I was in this category in the first place,' he said. 'I'm proud to be black in this room, honestly.'
Another big winner was Straight Outta Compton that won Outstanding Motion Picture and also an Outstanding Supporting Actor award for O'Shea Jackson, Jr.
Other winners at the NAACP Image Awards held in Pasadena, California, included Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Marsai Martin for their roles in ABC's comedy Black-ish.
