How Canadian NHL teams fared last night

The Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Oilers, Canucks and Flames were in action on Tuesday night. Here's a quick look at how they fared:

Leafs end losing streak

Matt Hunwick's first goal as a Toronto Maple Leaf will be slotted in the memorable category, a point shot through a maze of players that eluded Philadelphia Flyers goalie Steve Mason with 7.5 seconds left in regulation to lead his team to a 3-2 victory, its first in six games. Joffrey Lupul also snapped an 11-game goalless streak with his 10th of the season.

Outside looking in

The Montreal Canadiens were knocked out of playoff position in the Eastern Conference by virtue of a 4-1 loss to Boston and New Jersey's 4-2 doubling of Calgary. The Canadiens slipped to 10th with their fifth straight loss and are 4-16-1 in their last 21 games. Their lone goal-scorer on this night was Mark Barberio with his first in nearly a year.

Lightning strike 6 times

Edmonton provided enough offence in its first game without injured centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins but had trouble containing a surging Tampa Bay offence that beat Oilers goalie Anders Nilsson five times on 30 shots on the way to a sixth consecutive victory, 6-4 on home ice. Zack Kassian, playing his fourth game with the Oilers, collected his first points with a goal and assist.

Badly outplayed

Despite being outshot by a wide margin, Vancouver managed to get to overtime but not a shootout as J.T. Miller converted a wraparound with 1:06 left in the extra period to lead the New York Rangers to a come-from-behind 3-2 win. Ryan Miller made 46 saves for the Canucks, who have allowed 40 or more shots in each of the first four games on their six-game road trip.

Flickering Flames

A bolstered lineup, with the return of forwards Jiri Hudler and Joe Colborne along with defenceman Ladislav Smid, didn't bring the desired results for the Calgary Flames, who lost for the fourth time in five starts, 4-2 in New Jersey. On the few bright spots for the Flames was their power play (2-for-4) and New Jersey native Johnny Gaudreau, who had two assists to give him six points in the last five contests and 45 points in 44 games overall.
