The cruise ship for sun worshippers: Inside the 'floating beach condo' with glass catwalks, cabins with balconies… and the longest zipline at sea

  • MSC Seaside, inspired by a beach condo concept, is due to launch in 2017 and will sail from Miami to the Caribbean

A new style of ship that pays tribute to the great outdoors, designed with sun worshippers in mind, has been unveiled by MSC Cruises.

The first ship of the 'Seaside' class is said to be inspired by a beach condo concept, bringing guests and the sea closer.

MSC Seaside which boasts three glass catwalks overlooking the water, a 360 degree open-air promenade, balcony cabins and wellness cabins, is the first of up to three next-generation smart ships the company is due to launch and will come into service in December 2017.

Due to sail year round from Miami to the Caribbean, the ship will take full advantage of the good weather. 

In a prototype video and renderings, MSC Cruises revealed this week, that the ship will feature cabins and suites with outdoor spaces, al fresco dining, outdoor fitness facilities and luxury cabanas for spa treatments in the fresh air.

Guests keen to embrace the condo lifestyle can stay in a collection of terraced balcony cabins with their own private terrace overlooking the sea and promenade. There are also cluster cabins for family groups and luxury suites with a private outdoor Jacuzzi.

In addition to the 360-degree open air promenade, said to be the widest on any ship ever built, guests will be able to feel as though they are walking on water on three glass catwalks. The top deck catwalk which has a glass floor and glass balustrades will span 30metres while the other two on deck eight are 40metres long, forming part of the promenade.

As well as strolling along the Mediterranean-style waterfront, guests on board can stay in one of two Wellness Cabins which feature fitness equipment; or explore the MSC Yacht Club on the foredecks where there is a private solarium, a private lounge and restaurant

Holidaymakers who like to continue their healthy regime while away can book into one of two wellness cabins which feature fitness equipment. There is also a yacht club on board with a private solarium, lounge and restaurant.

Entertainment at sea includes a theatre, comedy club, full sized bowling alley and a 5D cinema. 

Thrillseekers can sample the ‘longest zipline on any cruise ship at sea’ whizzing 130metres across the length of the ship. There is also an aquapark with four slides including slideboarding, which is a waterslide and interactive video game in one. Guests of all ages can also embark on an adventure trail ropes course during their journey.

The ship is set to feature Mediterranean and international cuisine across nine restaurants including a Pan-Asian eatery in partnership with chef Roy Yamaguchi, a luxury seafood outlet and a steak house. 

MSC cruises is partnering with Samsung to offer guests smart features during their voyage including NFC bracelets and cruise cards which allow families to geo-locate their children. Other new technology features will include interactive photo walls.

With a maximum capacity for 5,179 guests, the ship is set to sail from Miami around the Bahamas, Mexico, Jamaica and Puerto Rico. It will also stop at the company’s private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve off the coast of the Bahamas. The 95-acre island has six beaches, a Yacht club, restaurants, bars and 2,000 seat open air amphitheatre.

MSC Seaside forms a part of the company’s ten-plus year’s £7billion investment plan, which includes the building of up to 11 next-generation smart ships coming into service between 2017 and 2026.
