Verdict: Jingoistic but well-crafted
There can't be many films that make Clint Eastwood's American Sniper look subtle, still less wishy-washily liberal, but here's one of them: a very long, very loud exercise in tub-thumping jingoism, claiming to tell the true story of the terrorist attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Libya in 2012.
The director is Michael Bay (Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Transformers), who didn't get where he is today by showing restraint.
Here, he lets off both barrels once again, giving us gun battles, fire storms, the full shock and awe, as six heroic former elite soldiers, now contracted by the CIA, try to repel the attack that will leave four Americans dead, including the ambassador, Chris Stevens.

But with all that smoke swirling around our six heroes, all bearded, all muscle-bound, it's almost impossible to tell them apart. 'So which of them died?' was a typical comment as we left the cinema.
Another was: 'Pardon?' It's very challenging on the eardrums.
