The couple have now been married for 45 years and Ian told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield that he knew she was the one straight away.
He said: 'I met her on the Wednesday and I asked her to marry me on the Thursday. We got married after ten days.'
Phillip also touched upon Ian's troubled childhood in which he later ended up homeless.

'I'm moving on from all that,' he said. 'I slept on the street and then I joined the army, before meeting Anne.'
Ian also talked about his love of music and said he realised he could sing by chance.
'We had a club at one point,' he said. 'I went to the toilet and they had this guy in the corner singing Without You by Neilssen came on. He got to the high note and he couldn't hit it.
'I put my head on his shoulder and sang it. This was 30 years ago.'
Rylan Clark was blown away when he learned the couple had been married for 45 years - with Ian admitting Anne proposed to him after just one day
Anne said: 'At that stage in his life, I was at home bringing up four boys.'
Ian soared straight through to the semi-finals of Britain's Got Talent after impressing the judges on Saturday night.

Talented team: He soared straight through to the semi-finals of Britain's Got Talent alongside his wife Ann as one of Saturday night's quirkier acts after David Walliams pressed his golden buzzer for the pair
Ian revealed that one night when he was sleeping rough in Barnsley South Yorks he was attacked by strangers.
He said: 'Two guys offered me a warm room and I was naive and said yes and they raped me. I didn’t go to the police because I didn’t want my mum and dad to find me.
'These things are haunting. They don’t go away. I’ve had therapy and tried to commit suicide but my point is don’t give up. I want to inspire people to realise you are never too old to achieve your dreams.'
