Jane Channell slides to 6th in World Cup skeleton

Jane Channell missed the podium for a second time in a month Friday, finishing sixth in a World Cup skeleton race at Lake Placid, N.Y.

The 27-year-old from North Vancouver, B.C., clocked one minute 51.27 seconds, less than one second behind winner Annie O'Shea's two-run time of 1:50.34.

On Dec. 11, Channell was sixth at a World Cup stop in Konigssee, Germany.

Fellow Canadian Elisabeth Vathje placed 12th in Friday's field of 21.

O'Shea's performance represented her first medal on the circuit since Dec. 10, 2011.

"I'm surprised at how hard it is to put into words," O'Shea told reporters. "You'd think like you'd know exactly what it would feel like to win, but you really don't.

"When I came down and saw the clock say '1' after me I was like, 'OK, I'm guaranteed third.' And I was really happy with that."

Switzerland's Marina Gilardoni finished second in 1:50.43, and Britain's Laura Deas was third in 1:50.59. World Cup leader Tina Hermann of Germany placed fourth.
