Golden Globe Awards 2016 host Ricky Gervais starts off with a bang

Ricky Gervais gave fans a taste of what's to come at the Golden Globes Awards with a rather crude afternoon tweet.

The 54-year-old comedian unleashed his trademark humour while posing in bed ahead of his hosting duties at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills California on Sunday evening.

'Better get dressed and offend some humourless c**ts I suppose,' he wrote alongside a shot of him looking incredibly disheveled.

On fine form: gervais and his longterm partner Jane Fallon arrive for the Golden Globes on Sunday; the actor joked he was 'already drunk'

He later posted a selfie that showed him looking sharp in shades and a suit.

By the time Gervais arrived on the red carpet he was on fine form, jokingly pretending to be drunk.

'I’m heavily sedated under doctor’s orders,' he told a skeptical Ryan Seacrest.

When Ryan asked Jane Fallon, Gervais' partner of some 33 years, if the star had actually been drinking, she replied: 'Before, during, after.'

Gervais agreed, adding: 'Just a little.'

He then bluntly told Ryan: 'I’m looking forward to it being over. I’m not cut out for this.'

The British comedian is taking back hosting duties from the popular duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. He has hosted it three-times previously in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Gervais already prepared viewers for his sometimes cruel jokes as he tweeted a cheeky apology days earlier for those who will be offended by his jokes.

He wrote on Twitter New Year's Day: 'Because I can see the future, I'd like to apologise now for the things I said at next week's Golden Globes. I was drunk & didn't give a f***.'

Gervais has been given free reign on stage, despite the controversy surrounding his past quips about Scientology, Mel Gibson and how making a Holocaust movie guarantees awards glory.

'They said I could say what I want again,' the he Ellen DeGeneres during a recent interview.

Gervias is the star and brains behind the popular TV shows The Office, Extras, and Derek has won seven Bafta awards, five British comedy awards, three Golden Globes and two Emmys.

The Golden Globes is regarded as the second most prestigious awards ceremony for American film, just behind the Academy Awards.

The awards are bestowed by the 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and recognises excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign.

Going into Sunday night, Todd Haynes' 1950s romance Carol leads all nominees with five nods, including best picture (drama) and best actress for both of its leads, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

In the best picture category, it will compete with Spotlight, The Revenant, Room and Mad Max: Fury Road.

Netflix earned a leading eight nods on the TV side, where nominations were scattered across streaming services, broadcast and cable.

Six shows come in tied for the most nominations with three: Fargo, Mr. Robot, Outlander, Transparent, American Crime and Wolf Hall.
