Canada's Daniel Nestor earns 1,000th doubles tennis win

Canada's Daniel Nestor has hit a milestone on the ATP Tour by earning the 1,000 doubles match victory of his pro career.

Nestor, along with partner Marcelo Melo of Brazil, beat France's Jeremy Chardy and India's Leander Paes 6-4, 6-4 on Monday in men's doubles action at the Apia International Sydney in Australia to reach the mark.

Nestor is the first men's doubles player to win 1,000 matches. Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl and Roger Federer have hit the milestone in singles.

"It's really special making it to 1,000, especially having my family here with me," said Nestor, who's from Toronto. "A special moment like this, it's really important to share it with others, the people that have been with me through thick and thin and through most of the victories."

The 43-year-old Nestor, who turned pro in 1991, has won 88 men's doubles titles on the ATP Tour, including eight Grand Slams. He won a gold medal for Canada at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

His first ATP Tour doubles win came with fellow Canadian Sebastien Lareau in January 1993 in Auckland, New Zealand.

Nestor won the Apia International Sydney tournament in 2015 for the fifth time, giving him at least one men's doubles title per year for 22 straight years.

Nestor is now 1,000-412 in doubles his pro career.
