Asking fans to pray for his pop, the actor thanked them for their support on a Facebook post featuring the same image: 'Martin extends a big thumbs up and a BIGGER heart felt "THANK YOU" for all your well wishes and prayers. He wants to wish you a very Merry Christmas and sends you all a mighty blessing!'

Martin first became aware of his heart troubles back when he was filming the movie that made him a legend, Apocalypse Now in 1976.

The star - who was just in his mid-thirties - was living in a remote area of the Philippines shooting the Vietnam war-set epic, when he collapsed and nearly died before he could get to a hospital.

Despite being given his last rights, a village doctor was able to stabilise him until he could be flown out of the jungle.
