Topple defending champion Montreal Carabins 26-23 on Van Gylswyk kick

The UBC Thunderbirds are the Vanier Cup champions.

Freshman quarterback Michael O'Connor led the Thunderbirds to a dramatic 26-23 victory over the defending champion Montreal Carabins.

The Thunderbirds were making their first appearance in the Canadian university championship game since they won in 1997.

In a dramatic finish, UBC intercepted a Montreal pass to regain possession with just over a minute to play.

Quinn Van Gylswyk connected on a 20-yard field goal with no time remaining to seal the victory.
