Gino's Italian Escape - Islands in the Sun (ITV1, 8.00pm)

On Sardinia, chef Gino D'Acampo takes a fishing trip and learns how fishing in the deep blue waters runs a close run second in importance to farming on the island. He then visits the bustling capital city of Cagliari, where he is introduced to the unique textures that the locals use to enhance their fish dishes. After a whistle-stop shop at Europe's largest covered market, D’Acampo makes his way to the magical ancient site of Nora, where he cooks a succulent tuna dish, prepared as the sun sets over the ruins.

Great Continental Railway Journeys (BBC Two, 9.00pm)

Michael Portillo traces the early 20th-century roots of the Spanish Civil War, which divided his family and sent his father into exile. The former politician discovers a nation fractured at the time by social tensions and regional loyalties, which today offer a rich diversity of cultures to delight the tourist. After arriving in Mallorca from Barcelona, Portillo spoils himself enjoying spectacular scenic views aboard a 1912 vintage railway and a 1913 tram. He also gets trampled underfoot at the bottom of a Catalan `people steeple' and learns to make the perfect paella.

Ireland with Simon Reeve (BBC Two, 8.00pm)

The second leg of Simon Reeve’s journey begins at the Giant's Causeway, before visiting a kelp farm on Rathlin Island. He heads to the Dark Hedges in Co Antrim, one of the filming locations from Game of Thrones, and visits Belfast for the July 12 festivities, discovering how the event has divided the city. He also learns more about Cromwell's influence on Ireland, attends the Gaze film festival, and meets monkeys at an animal sanctuary in the Wicklow mountains.

The Secret History of the British Garden (BBC Two, 9.00pm)

The extraordinary changes that occurred in the 19th century, as advances in technology made gardens more lavish, but also more widely available. Monty Don pays a visit to Queen Victoria's royal retreat at Osborne and Derby's Arboretum, which was the country's first public park. He also investigates the scientific secrets behind the establishment of botanical gardens in Kew and Edinburgh

Monday November 30

Grand Tours of the Scottish Islands (BBC Two, 7.00pm)

The Scottish TV presenter Paul Murton visits Islay, travelling from Finlaggan - where the famous ruler Somerled once held court - along the windswept coast, through its historic ports and villages to end on its highest mountain. Along the way he joins dedicated locals keeping the seafaring traditions of the island alive, discovers the secrets of Islay's illicit whisky distilling past and climbs Ben Vicar for a breathtaking view across the Hebrides.

Railway Walks (BBC Four, 7.30pm & 8.00pm)

Julia Bradbury offers an insight into industrial Britain as she walks along disused train lines across England, Scotland and Wales. She begins her journey in the heart of the Peak District with a walk along the Monsal Trail, taking in the limestone cliffs and soaring viaducts of the Midland Railway She then moves on to the Mawddach estuary in Snowdonia. The World's Most Famous Train (Channel Four, 8.00pm)

During its nine-month-long season, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express makes over 60 journeys, covering 100,000 miles, with the majority of trips between London and Venice. The train is comprised of 17 1920s carriages that have transported the rich and famous across Italy, Switzerland, and Turkey for more than a century. This documentary follows the stories of the staff and passengers as the train makes its way across Europe, with some customers having paid more than £2,000 for the privilege

Countrywise (ITV1, 7.30pm)

Liz Bonnin experiences the wonders of the south Wales coast in a rather extreme way, Ben Fogle vaccinates badgers in the Peak District and Paul Heiney visits a farm in Snowdonia where cutting-edge technology and old-fashioned farming methods come together to protect the environment

Loch Lomond: A Year in the Wild (Five, 8.00pm)

The winter is mild and wet, which is good news for some but bad news for others at Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Cameras follow red deer who are forced to higher ground, while salmon have gone six months without food. Meanwhile, mountain hares turn a conspicuous white to help them hide from predators, but with no snow they have become easy targets for hungry eagles.

Wednesday December 2

Dan Cruickshank: Resurrecting History – Warsaw (BBC Four, 9.00pm)

Dan Cruickshank returns to his childhood city, Warsaw, for the first time in 60 years. In a moving encounter, he recalls his boyhood memories and those of the people and the city. Warsaw suffered huge devastation during the Second World War but then underwent one of the greatest reconstruction jobs in history. Cruickshank grew up in the rebuilt old town, an experience, he says, inspired his love of architecture.

Thursday December 3

Alex Polizzi's Italian Islands (Five, 8.00pm)

Alex Polizzi continues her tour with a visit to smaller islands of southern Italy. She starts out on Capri, which, with its beauty, glamour and history, has been a celebrated holiday destination since Roman times. She enjoys its signature style, which she claims has never gone out of fashion. On Ischia, she scales the rocky heights of the medieval Aragonese Castle, before hopping across to the remote Aeolian island of Salina, where she samples the famous Malvasia wine.

Patagonia with Huw Edwards (BBC Four, 8.00pm)

Huw Edwards follows in the footsteps of settlers who travelled from Wales to Patagonia 150 years ago with the intention of creating a colony where their language and culture would endure. On arrival in South America, he meets descendants of the original immigrants and examines how much of their spirit lives on in the present . Repeat.

Friday December 4

Home of the Mafia, this portside city immediately stops the italian chef in his tracks with its vibrant street food culture and fascinating history, Gino has an unexpected encounter at the food market, meets a man who stood up to the mob, and tries wine tasting in Marsala. He ends his day in a nearby vineyard, cooking a succulant chicken in marsala sauce
