When marvelling at the Colosseum in Rome or visiting the Burj al Arab in Dubai, tourists probably don't give much thought to where the city's name came from.
But thanks to a new infographic the meanings of the names in destinations across Europe, America, Asia and even the Middle East have been illustrated.
The infographic, which was created by FlyAbuDhabi.co.uk, highlights the etymology of 31 of the best known cities including Amsterdam, Istanbul and even Las Vegas.
Destinations including Kiev, Warsaw and Vancouver were all revealed to have been named after the men that founded them.
Also in the graphic is Abu Dhabi which is revealed to mean 'father of the gazelle' and Athens is said to have been named after the Greek goddess, Athena.
Florence is formed from the Latin word for flowers and Beijing is a combination of 'Bei', which means north in Chinese, and 'Jing', which means capital.
