The Winnipeg Jets and Dustin Byfuglien have signed a five-year contract extension worth $38 million US.
The 30-year-old defender's contract is worth an average annual value of $7.6 million, according to the NHL team.
Byfuglien was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.
The six-foot-five, 260-pounder has played in every Jets game this season, registering 32 points, and is tied for second among NHL defencemen this season with 15 goals, behind only San Jose's Brent Burns.
"My family and I have loved Winnipeg and we're very happy to stay here and sign this," Byfuglien told reporters Monday. "I'm excited to be a Jet."
Byfuglien arrived in the Jets organization when it was still based in Atlanta following a trade from the Chicago Blackhawks, with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 2010.
"We've got a good group of guys here who I've been with for a while. I believe in what they're trying to do around here," said Byfuglien when asked about his decision to stay in Winnipeg. "You can't win a Stanley Cup overnight. It's a process."
Byfuglien played in his fourth NHL All-Star Game in Nashville at the end of January.
The Jets, who are nine points back of Colorado for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference with three games in hand, play the Blues in St. Louis on Tuesday night.
