How Canadian NHL teams fared last night

The Ottawa Senators were the only Canadian team not in action last night with the Canadiens and the Flames carrying the momentum of victories while the Oilers, Canucks and Leafs hoped to return to winning ways. Here's how they fared.

Canadiens strike down Lightning

Tomas Plekanec scored two goals and Ben Scrivens won his third straight game in goal as the Canadiens defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 in Montreal.

Plekanec broke a 1-1 tie in the second period as the Canadiens (27-24-4) scored three consecutive goals to seize control over the Lightning (29-20-4).

Scrivens, who made 37 saves, helped Montreal to its first three-game win streak in two months.

Flames hold off Leafs

Markus Granlund took advantage of a chance to suit up for the Flames who benched three players for disciplinary reasons, scoring a shorthanded goal and adding an assist to lead Calgary past the Maple Leafs, 4-3.

Granlund had been a healthy scratch for three games before Flames coach Bob Hartley benched Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan and Lance Bouma for being late for Monday's practice.

The Leafs, playing without captain Dion Phaneuf who was traded to Ottawa earlier Monday, closed to within a goal on scores by Josh Leivo and Jake Gardiner, but dropped their second game in on as many tries a five-game road swing.

Devils sink Oilers

Strong goaltending made the difference as the Devils' Cory Schneider outduelled Cam Talbot in the Oilers' net as New Jersey topped Edmonton 2-1 on the night when Devils goaltending legend Martin Brodeur had his No. 30 jersey retired.

Reid Boucher set up the Devils first goal and tallied the winner at 7:13 of the third period for the Devils (27-21-7).

New Jersey's special teams made the difference scoring on two manpower advantages while stopping all three Edmonton power play opportunities.

Scheifele lifts Jets

Mark Scheifele was the only one of eight players to score in a shootout to lead the Winnipeg Jets past the St. Louis Blues, 2-1.

It was the first shootout goal in four career tries for Scheifele who beat Brian Elliott in the St. Louis goal. Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck made 21 saves in regulation before turning away all four Blues shooters.

Winnipeg's Bryan Little and Colton Parayko of St. Louis had the goals in regulation.

Canucks halt 4-game slide

The Canucks used a goal and an assist from Bo Horvat and strong goaltending by Jacob Markstrom to halt a four-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory over the Avalanche in Denver.

Horvat assisted on Sven Baertschi's go-ahead goal in the second period and capped a three-goal rally for the Canucks with a goal 4:30 into the third period.

Markstrom stopped 29 of 30 Colorado shots.
