Canadiens sweep weekend with triumph over Hurricanes

Sven Andrighetto was the only player to score in a five-round shootout as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Ben Scrivens stopped all five Carolina shooters, including star centre Eric Staal on the final attempt, to secure the win.

Max Pacioretty scored in regulation time for Montreal (26-24-4), which swept a pair of weekend afternoon games after beating Edmonton 5-1 on Saturday.

Jeff Skinner scored for Carolina (24-21-9).

The Hurricanes had most of the scoring chances in the opening period but only converted when Skinner went to the net to tip Jordan Staal's shot past Scrivens at 2:27. Skinner has points in five straight games.

Pacioretty tied it 8:11 into the second frame when he took a diagonal feed from Andrei Markov and scored his 20th of the season with an off-wing wrist shot from the right circle. The Canadiens captain ended a seven-game goal-less drought.

The Hurricanes outshot Montreal 34-31 in regulation time and 35-34 overall.

It was a game of round number milestones, as Markov and Eric Staal each played his 900th game and Montreal centre Torrey Mitchell played his 500th. Staal, 31, has amassed 772 points while 37-year-old Markov, who missed large swaths of three seasons with knee injuries, has 518.

The Canadiens were coming off a 5-1 win Saturday over the Edmonton Oilers. It is the 25th year the Canadiens have played back to back afternoon games at home during Super Bowl weekend. They are (26-18-5) in those games.
