Sikorsky Ilya Muromets
Entered service: 1913
Number built: 85+
Why? The first true airliner, the Ilya Muromets was intended for commercial service but ended up being largely used by the Russian military during the First World War. It was more luxurious than anything that preceeded it, featuring comfy wicker chairs, a lounge, and a separate sleeping area. Its first flight carried 16 passengers, and in 1914 it set a world record by flying from St Petersburg to Kiev (some 1,200km) - a journey that took more than 14 hours.
