The Edmonton Oilers continue to get a great return on their latest investment.
Cam Talbot made 31 saves in Monday's 4-2 win over the Florida Panthers, two days after signing a three-year contract extension worth a reported $12.5 million US.
With the Oilers clinging to a 3-2 lead with less than three minutes left in regulation and Florida buzzing around their net, Talbot made a spectacular save on Panther defenceman Dmitry Kulikov's wraparound attempt.
Teddy Purcell allowed Talbot and his teammates to breathe easier when he scored an insurance goal at 18:32.
Talbot also came up big in the hours leading up to the announcement of his new deal, flashing the leather on a shot by Calgary defenceman T.J. Brodie in Saturday's 2-1 shootout victory.
Prior to Monday's contest, Talbot had a 4-4 record in his previous 10 starts but more telling was his 1.71 goals-against average and .941 save percentage as the Oilers averaged only 1.29 goals per game in that span.
In 27 games this season, the 28-year-old native of Caledonia, Ont., is 9-13-3 with a 2.56 GAA and .915 save percentage.
