John Scott unsure of NHL all-star game status

John Scott, the NHLer player turned latest addition on the St. John's IceCaps, says he doesn't know what his status will be in the upcoming 2016 National Hockey League all-star game.

Speaking with reporters in St. John's Sunday, Scott said he was surprised he'd been traded to the Montreal Canadiens on Friday and subsequently sent to St. John's in the AHL.

"Obviously it kind of surprised me," Scott said. "[I'm] happy to go to Montreal with the IceCaps here."

Now playing with the AHL, Scott said he's unsure what his role will be in the NHL game.

Thanked fans

"I wish I had the answer," Scott said. "I haven't really heard anything from the league or anything so I don't know what the position is or [kind of] where anyone stands right now. It's kind of up in the air."

Scott, who has five career NHL goals, garnered top votes in an online contest for the all-star game and was named captain for the Pacific Division team prior to his trade from the Arizona Coyotes.

The 33-year-old thanked fans for voting him in, adding it came as a surprise.

"I never had expected to go to Nashville or any kind of all-star game, especially in the NHL, so it was exciting," he said.

Scott did not play in Sunday's IceCaps game at the Mile One Stadium in St. John's against the Toronto Marlies.

As for his future in professional hockey, Scott said he has been speaking with officials in Montreal, but offered little insight as to where he sees himself.

"I've been around, they know what I bring to the table and if they want me to play up there I will," said Scott.

"I'm just going to come down here (St. John's) and do my job, and play my game."

The all-star game is taking place in Nashville, Tenn., on Jan. 31.
