She is known as the world's toughest trainer, but the strength she shows in the gym is nothing compared to what she needs in real life.
Jillian Michaels sat down with the DailyMail.com and revealed there is more to her than just a woman who yells at out-of-shape people.
The 41-year-old star said she has long been the target for abuse ever since she revealed she was a lesbian. She then faced more criticism when she and her partner Heidi Rhoades adopted a child from Haiti.

While Jillian has long been a fixture on our televisions as a fitness star, she and her family are now opening the doors to their private lives in a new E! reality show, Just Jillian, which premieres in the UK on Tuesday.
Michaels has two children: There is Phoenix, aged three, who Heidi carried, and is part-Latino. And she also has Lukensia, aged five, who was adopted from Haiti.
When asked if she has received bigoted remarks about her blended family, the star said yes.
She told the DailyMail.com exclusively: 'From when I first adopted a child that was black, I heard it all - the most racist, disgusting comments coming from both sides.'

She added: 'When I first revealed that Heidi and I were a couple, I heard it all. The most homophobic comments - "You're going to hell, you're sending your kids to hell."'
Jillian said, however, she tries to not let it affect her and hopes by letting cameras into her family's life she can start to change the attitude of some who judge.
'To be honest nothing can shake me, I've been in the public eye for 12 years now and I live my life.
'And our hope is that for every person who has issues with us and with [lesbians and adoption], is that maybe they will see an episode and maybe it will change their mind.

'I'm not here to come at those people, I'm here to maybe show them that it isn't necessarily what you think it is. It is probably a lot more relatable than you imagine.'

While many might think twice about exposing themselves so much, the trainer said she and business partner Giancarlo Chersich, who also stars in Just Jillian, decided it was an important way to help fans.
The 41-year-old told the DailyMail.com: 'We asked ''What is our company really about at the end of the day?'' And it is about building your best life. So we wanted to look at how you do that. But not from a place of on high. Or having all the answers [because] everybody on this show is imperfect and everyone in this show is struggling to evolve and grow.
'And we thought it would be more meaningful to open the doors and so people can be like ''Oh my god I just had that fight last night, oh my god I just went through that issues with my kids and their school, oh my god I just had that business disaster happen to me'' to try and look for answers with the audience in a way that.'
And that means the tough trainer facade often falls away as Jillian struggles to balance work, her family and love, which means, she said, 'It gets a little crazy.'
For business partner Giancarlo, it means fans get to see the real Jillian: 'I love that the show humanizes Jillian as people have a preconceived perception of her but she’s so much more. It’s as if she was your friend, you get to know about her life.'

'I’m trying to get to a place where it’s okay for balls to drop because they do. It’s not easy because it's ironic because it is an idea I always talk about.
'That you have to let go of this idea of perfection we have to appreciate progress when we have given everything we have. We have to know it’s good enough. I’m not preaching from this place of being on high, I’m preaching from this place of being in the mess.'

One of those 'messes' is in her relationship with the star facing a struggle with Heidi that many couple's face - Heidi wants to get married.
The fitness trainer said she is slowly coming around to the idea.
'I want to be clear it's not because I don’t love her, ironically it is because I do. It’s not because I don’t believe in monogamy, I do.

'It’s just that my parents were divorced, I have friends that are divorced. I grew up in Los Angeles, I consider myself a realist, you may call it a cynic. I call it a realist. But people do change and people don’t love each other unconditionally and things happen.

'We have been through a hell of a lot we are getting to place which is a good one finally after all the changes that have been brought on with two kids.
'[Marriage] is almost like signing that paper says we think we are impenetrable and that to me is a jinx, it’s like inviting the devil into the world.'
But of course Jillian being Jillian could not help but make sure DailyMail.com readers are able to stick to their New Year's Resolution.
Jillian, who personally decided to give up meat as she owns a pig, said the key to staying on track is making a change for all the right reasons.
'I think you have to have an emotional connection to it and that’s exactly what I believe change requires. It requires you to have a very detailed vision that you are emotionally connected to so when the going gets tough it is still worth it.
'I always say work with purpose is passion, work without purpose is punishment, it has got to have purpose.'
