Close as can be: Dr Phil has been married to his wife Robin since 1976. And while attending the DailyMail.com People's Choice Awards after party in Los Angeles on Wednesday, the 65-year-old TV star gave a hint as to how they have managed to be together so long
Dr Phil wore a blue blazer with a black shirt and slacks to the event while his wife stood out in a red dress.
The two mingled with his executive producer Carla Pennington as well as stars such as Amber Rose, Cheryl Burke and David Foster.
Ms Rose posted a photo with the advice guru to Instagram with the caption: 'Just hanging with my Dad last night. LOL'
Her side: Robin explained that there was nothing accidental about their long-lived union. 'We made a deal, really, when we first got married that we were not going to just be married, we were going to really focus on being happily married'
It's safe to say that Dr Phil McGraw and his wife Robin have one of the longest lasting marriages in Hollywood.
Dr Phil said that the state of their marriage was more important than how long it had lasted.
'You know, people always talk about staying married,' he said. 'But there's a big difference between being married and being happily married. Anybody can stay married but being happily married, big difference.'
His side: Her husband agreed, explaining: 'And it sounds just like semantics but it’s not. Huge difference. Huge difference'
And Robin explained that there was nothing accidental about their long-lived union.
'We made a deal, really, when we first got married that we were not going to just be married, we were going to really focus on being happily married. So it was a goal and it still is to this day. We just are going to do whatever it takes to be happily married.'
Her husband agreed, explaining: 'And it sounds just like semantics but it’s not. Huge difference. Huge difference.'
Robin was just 23 when she married the daytime talk show impresario.
'I will say, your needs change over the years,' she admitted. 'We just have that conversation and we just always want to know – is there something you need? Is there something you want? What can I do to make you happy?'

Her husband agreed, saying: 'You’re really right, your needs do change across time and you gotta give each other space.'
Not only have they been married for 39 years, but the two also work together - with Robin acting as a women's advocate on her husband's show.
And Dr Phil, 65, said that wouldn't work for everyone.
'I mean, we spend a lot of time together. We’re at the show together every day which, I have to tell you, if you would have asked me 20 years ago if I wanted to go to work together every day, I would have said, "I’m not sure about that."'
However living and working together has proved a success.

'We have absolutely enjoyed it,' said Phil, adding that the two never grew tired of one another's company.
'People told us, "never build a house together." We did that and it was an absolute delight. We loved every minute of it. We really did. And usually that leads to divorce. And we had a ball. And we redecorated houses and had a ball.
'And now, we go to work together every day and we just get the biggest kick out of it because we get to share so many things and then we talk about them at dinner at night about what happened during the day and stuff.
'And it’s given us a commonality of experience that we really enjoy.'

Friends indeed: The specialist had a laugh with hit maker
She sure knows how to glam it up: Robin shared this post with the caption, 'Ready for the @dailymail People's Choice Awards after party!'

Peace at the party: The beauty with her 'best friend' Carla. Robin's caption read: 'Partying with Carla is a #peace of cake'
But despite their shared interests, the two do make sure to give one another their own space.
'I go off and play tennis. She now has a business that is just exploding and so she has a whole different life in that regards so we go off and do different things. And that just refreshes you when you come back and get together so it’s great to do that as well.'
The couple share two sons, Jay and Jordan, and are also proud grandparents, from Jay's marriage to Erica Dahm.
'That’s like the ultimate payoff,' said Robin. 'That’s that 40-year pay off, these grandbabies. It’s like, we’ve done our job so now we get this dessert every day. We just get to hug and kiss on those babies.'
And Dr Phil is every inch the proud Grandpa.
'I’ve become that guy. If they didn’t have cell phones now with pictures, I’d be carrying around an album under my arm, so, we love that.'
