The best travel videos of 2015

1. The flying cat

Best travel video of the year? There can only be one winner. This hilarious clip (shown above), which emerged in June, starred a stowaway cat giving the pilot of a light aircraft in French Guiana the shock of his life.

2. Skiing on grass

3. Barbados as you've never seen it

The Caribbean island never looked more enticing than in this drone video, shot for Telegraph Travel in February.

4. The most embarrassing video you'll ever watch

The following month saw Condor Ferries unveil one of the most cringeworthy videos you're likely to see. Set to the tune of Rapper's Delight by Sugarhill Gang, it stars three staff members from the UK firm. Each of the trio attempt - with extremely limited success - to showcase their rapping skills while pulling off some truly dreadful dance moves.

5. The secrets of the Science Museum

Far more cultured was this Telegraph Travel production, which saw the curators of London's Science Museum talk to us about their favourite exhibits.

6. A 12-day safari in two minutes

This beautiful timelapse might be the closest you'll get to a safari holiday without leaving your living room. The work of New York-based photographer Tyler Fairbank, it offers a flavour of a classic "Big Five" African wildlife holiday, with grazing elephants, lumbering rhino, dozing hyenas and wallowing hippos all making appearances. After dark, the camera tilts towards the heavens to capture star-filled skies. Fairbank created the video by stitching together hundreds of individual photos, all taken during a 12-day trip to South Africa this summer. He took almost 15,000 pictures in total.

7. Tourists pet whales

A group of tourists had the close encounter of a lifetime off the coast of Baja California, Mexico, in August. Their boat was able to get near enough to a pod of four grey whales, including two young calves, that they were able to pat the majestic animals.

The overhead shots were captured earlier this year by Mark Cawardine, the wildlife photographer, broadcaster and regular contributor to Telegraph Travel, using a drone. Other clips were taken used an underwater camera.

8. Hotel owner's jet-ski stunt goes wrong

A millionaire hotel owner was left red-faced in June after his jet-ski stunt – devised to add sparkle to the opening of his latest property – ended with an embarrassing spill. Petter Stordalen – once described as the “flashiest Scandinavian on the planet” – sought to live up to his nickname at the inauguration of the waterfront Clarion Hotel & Congress in Malmo. But his dismount didn't quite go according to plan...

9. The creepiest advert for a ski lodge ever

An American real estate agency released this unintentionally hilarious advert for a multi-million dollar ski lodge in Telluride, Colorado, in August. It starts out cringeworthy, before becoming positively sinister...

10. What happens to your bag after you check in?

It's surprisingly complicated, as this footage of the baggage handling system at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol reveals.

11. Martin Johnson joins the Men in Black

We learnt two things from Air New Zealand's Men in Black-themed safety video, shot ahead of the Rugby World Cup. 1) Israel Dagg has some decent rap skills and 2) Martin Johnson has no future in acting.

12. Skiers tear it up in Sheffield

Sheffield Ski Village was once a focal points for the UK's vibrant skiing and snowboarding scene. Now it resembles a post-apocalyptic wasteland. For that very reason it was chosen as the venue for this trick-filled ski video earlier this summer.

13. Chinese traveller climbs into airport security scanner

The vast majority of us are all too au fait with the rigmarole of air travel. Put liquids above 100ml into the hold. Remove your laptop from your bag. Take off your jacket and belt. No scissors allowed. Not so this chap in China, who apparently didn't realise that airport security scanners are designed to check luggage - not humans.

14. The best aerial views of Ireland since the opening credits of Father Ted

We just couldn't get enough of drones in 2015.

15. How to say 'I love you' in 31 languages

And finally... the perfect took for globetrotting Casanovas.
