Steven Spielberg SNUBBED by Golden Globes as Johnny Depp, Mad Men, and House Of Cards are left out of awards race

Johnny Depp, Steven Spielberg and his film Bridge Of Spies, along with Mad Men and House Of Cards have all been snubbed by the Golden Globe Awards.

The Hollywood actor - who received a nod for 2010 thriller The Tourist - missed out on a nod for his portrayal of gang leader James 'Whitey' Bulger in crime drama Black Mass when nominations were revealed on Thursday.

While perhaps the biggest upset was the Hollywood Foreign Press ignoring Spielberg, who is a recipient of their Cecil B. DeMille Award and has won twice before for best director.

The iconic filmmaker's Bridge Of Spies is a historical drama taking place during the Cold War and stars Tom Hanks, one of the few actors to win an Academy Award two years in a row.

What's more, Hanks' role as lawyer James B. Donovan in the historical thriller clearly didn't impress the HFPA enough as he was snubbed in the Best Actor category.

While House Of Cards swept the Screen Actors Guild nominations the day before, only Robin Wright got a nod from the HFPA, which otherwise ignored the critically acclaimed Netflix series.

Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington's character Jon Snow was killed off this year but the dramatic scenes clearly didn't help the hunk get a Golden Globe nod for Best Actor in a TV Drama series as his name was not on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's (HFPA) list.

Meanwhile, Taylor Schilling, who stars as Piper Chapman in prison comedy-drama series Orange is the New Black, missed out for Best Actress in a Comedy, with Rachel Bloom, Jamie Lee Curtis, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Gina Rodriguez and Lily Tomlin all receiving nominations today.

Amy Poehler and Amy Schumer were snubbed in the same category for their roles in Parks And Recreation and Inside Amy Schumer respectively, and there weren't any laughs for the stars of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Broad City - both shows missed out on Best Comedy nods.

There were several other shocks in the small screen nods for the Best Drama accolade as Mad Men wasn't recognised, although leading man Jon Hamm is up for Best Actor in a TV Drama series for his portrayal of Don Draper in the AMC show.

No longer their Golden boy? Perhaps the biggest upset was the Hollywood Foreign Press ignoring Spielberg, who is a recipient of their Cecil B. DeMille Award and has won twice before for best director

The Good Wife and Jessica Jones also missed out, as did TV series House of Cards and The Walking Dead.

Other omissions in the movie categories include bio drama Straight Outta Compton, and Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman missed out for Grace of Monaco.

The nominations were announced by America Ferrera, Angela Bassett, Dennis Quaid and Chloe Grace Moretz at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Thursday.

The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on January 10, 2016, at the Beverly Hilton and hosted by Ricky Gervais.

The Golden Globes are regarded as the second most prestigious awards ceremony for American film, just behind the Academy Awards.

The awards are an accolade bestowed by 93 member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for film and television, both in foreign and domestic markets.

Stellar anouncement: The nominations were announced by America Ferrera, Angela Bassett, Dennis Quaid and Chloe Grace Moretz at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Thursday

Stellar anouncement: The nominations were announced by America Ferrera, Angela Bassett, Dennis Quaid and Chloe Grace Moretz at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Thursday

It has been held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel since 1961, and will be broadcast live on NBC this coming year from the same location on January 10, 2016.

The Golden Globes often rank as the third most watched awards show each year, just behind the Oscars and the Grammys.

Until 2010 the Globes did not have a regular host. Ricky Gervais went on to break that tradition by hosting the show from 2010 to 2012.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey continued Gervais' newly minted tradition by going on to host the show consecutively from 2012 to 2015.

The Hollywood Foreign Press was established by a group of writers in 1943 and the very first Golden Globes were held the following year in 1944 at the 20th Century Fox Studios.

Meanwhile, the Golden Globes are often seen as a precursor for the Oscars.

Last year alone, Eddie Redmayne won for best actor at the Golden Globes for Theory Of Everything before going on to claim Academy Awards gold.

While Julianne Moore won both the Globe and Oscar for Still Alice that same year.
