Leonardo DiCaprio earns Golden Globe nomination for The Revenant as he goes head-to-head with previous winner Eddie Redmayne

Eddie Redmayne swept the board during last year's awards season, but it's looking like 2016 could be Leonardo DiCaprio's year.

Leonardo was nominated by the Golden Globes on Thursday for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for his performance in Alejandro González Iñárritu's frontier drama The Revenant.

The Hollywood golden boy will be pitted against last year's winner Eddie, as well as Michael Fassbender, Bryan Cranston and Will Smith.

The 41-year-old previously won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical in 2013 for The Wolf Of Wall Street.

And he also walked away with Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for The Aviator in 2004.

Though the Titanic star, whose 1997 co-star Kate Winslet was similarly given a nod on Thursday, has missed out on the prestigious Academy Awards five times (once as a producer).

is it a ringer? The Revenant is also up for Best Picture - Drama and for Best Director, signalling it could be another awards season sweep for Iñárritu, who claimed best picture, best director, and best screenplay at last year's Oscars for Birdman

His film The Revenant is also up for Best Picture - Drama and for Best Director, signalling it could be another awards season sweep for Iñárritu, who claimed best picture, best director, and best screenplay at last year's Oscars for Birdman.

Last year, man of the moment Eddie picked up the Best Actor Golden Globe, Oscar, SAG and BAFTA for The Theory Of Everything.

He returns in 2015 with The Danish Girl, a true tale of Lili Elbe groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.

His co-star Alicia Vikander, who plays the actor's wife Gerda Wegener in the film, was recognised not just once but twice in this year's nominations.

Alicia gets a second nod, in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture category for her role in Ex Machina.

Surprises in the nominations included Lady Gaga for her role in American Horror Story: Hotel, competing in the Best Actress in a Series/TV Movie category.

Also, close comedy pals Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer will compete for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical, alongside Melissa McCarthy, Maggie Smith and Lily Tomlin.

The Golden Globes are regarded as the second most prestigious awards ceremony for American film, just behind the Academy Awards.

The awards are an accolade bestowed by 93 member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for film and television, both in foreign and domestic markets.

It has been held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel since 1961, and will be broadcast live on NBC this coming year from the same location on January 10, 2016.
