How Canadian NHL teams fared last night

The Vancouver Canucks were the lone Canadian team on the ice Sunday, skating in Chicago. Here's a roundup of how they fared and the other two contests played last night.

Canucks draw blank in Chi-town

Corey Crawford turned aside all 30 shots directed his way and Patrick Kane had an assist on the first-period goal that turned out to be the game-winner in the Blackhawks' 4-0 shutout of the Vancouver Canucks in Chicago.

Kane helped set up Duncan Keith's power-play score in the first period to extend his scoring streak to 26 games, the most in the NHL since the 1992-93 season.

Crawford earned his second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season, tying him for the league lead with Jake Allen of St. Louis and Devan Dubnyk of Minnesota,

Greiss, Isles whitewash Devils

Marek Zidlicky scored twice and Thomas Greiss made 27 saves for his first shutout of the season to lead the Islanders to a 4-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils, extending New York's streak without a regulation loss to 10 games.

John Tavares and Matt Martin also scored for the Islanders, who are on an 8-0-2 stretch and moved into second place in the Metropolitan Division — one point ahead of the crosstown-rival Rangers.

Avalanche, Varlamov bury Blues

Jack Skille and John Mitchell scored in the first period and Semyon Varlamov made a season-high 42 saves to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday.

Carl Soderberg added an empty-net goal with 22 seconds remaining to seal Colorado's fifth win in seven games.

Varlamov stopped the first 36 shots until Vladimir Tarasenko spoiled his shutout bid with a power-play goal with 7:05 remaining. It was Tarasenko's team-high 18th of the season.
