'Questions will be answered': Ridley Scott to explore the origins of his 1979 sci-fi classic Alien in three Prometheus sequels

Off the back of his wildly successful sci-fi film The Martian, Ridley Scott has confirmed he will make three Prometheus sequels.

The films, the first of which Alien: Covenant is slated to begin filming in Australia in March, will connect 2012's Prometheus to Scott's 1979 classic Alien.

'I was amazed that, in the three (films) that followed (Alien), no-one asked the question, 'why the Alien, who made it and why?' Scott said during a press conference in Sydney, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

'So I came up with the notion of Prometheus 1, which starts to indicate who might have made it and where it came from,' Scott explained.

The director, who famously never made sequels until now, said the upcoming trilogy will explain how the Alien that burst out of actor John Hurt's chest in the 1979 film's most iconic scene came to be.

'Why was this space jockey there and why did he have an Alien inside him? Those questions will be answered,' said Scott.

Alien: Covenant will tell the story of the colony ship Covenant and how the crew discover what they think is an uncharted paradise but is actually a dark, dangerous world.

The only inhabitant of this world is the robotic David, to be played once again by Michael Fassbender.

Scott added that he was looking to cast a significant number of Australian actors for the 16-week shoot that will be based at Sydney's Fox Studios.

In addition to the Prometheus sequels, the British filmmaker is moving ahead with plans for a sequel to Blade Runner.

He revealed it will be made in Budapest, where he made The Martian, with Dennis Villeneuve directing from Scott's script.
