It must be a trunk road! Drivers left baffled by bizarre rock that looks just like an ELEPHANT

  • The unusual Elephant Rock can be found in Castelsardo, Sardinia and bears a striking resemblance to the creature
  • It is situated on the State Road 134 and has been described by a photographer as being a 'peculiarity' of her town
  • The rock also has archaeological significance as it contains two Domus de Janas, which is a type of chamber tomb

Drivers are being left stunned by this bizarre rock formation on a roadside in Italy - that looks just like an elephant.

Pictures of the unusual Elephant Rock of Castelsardo, Sardinia, Italy, were taken at sunset by student Giulia Lupino.

She travelled down the State Road 134 to take pictures of the rock that she describes as a 'peculiarity' of her town, due to its resemblance to the trunked animal.

The large mass of trachyte stone is believed to have been part of a rocky complex of Monte Casteddazzu, before it broke away and rolled down the valley to its current location on the trunk road.

Erosion led to the unusual appearance being formed, with the perforated boulder bearing what looks like a trunk.

Lupino, 19, said: 'This rock has the form of an elephant thanks to the elements, which are the true sculptors of it.

'When I saw it for the first time I thought it was only small because I was surprised when I finally got up to it and realised it was about four metres high.

'It's incredible to see it from each side.'

Not only does the rock add to the beauty of the area but it also has archaeological significance as it contains two 'Domus de Janas' - a type of chamber tomb found in Sardinia.

It's not the only natural formation to resemble the large creature.

On the island of Heimaey in Southern Iceland, a basalt rock on the ocean-side cliff bears an uncanny resemblance to that of a giant elephant - complete with wrinkled skin - reaching its trunk into the sea.

Rising out of the water, the creature can be found on the largest island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, which is a set of islands formed by volcanoes.

Although the gigantic elephant is one of the island's most frequented visitor attractions, today, tourists also flock to see the puffins during the summer months.
