NHL playoffs: What you need to know for Friday

The Stanley Cup playoffs are on. Each day, we'll keep you updated on the important news involving players, starting lineups, injuries and more. Check back throughout the day to stay in the know.

After Tampa Bay ended Detroit's season — and probably Pavel Datsyuk's NHL career — last night, three more teams can put the kibosh on their opponents tonight in Game 5 of their respective series.

Washington (vs. Philly, CBC, CBC Sports app, 7 p.m. ET) and Dallas (vs. Minnesota, 9:30 p.m. ET) can advance to the second round with wins on home ice, while San Jose can depose the Kings with its third straight road victory of the series (CBC, CBC Sports app, 10:30 p.m. ET).

Meanwhile, the Islanders and Panthers will fight for the upper hand in their all-square series when they meet for Game 5 in Florida (8 p.m. ET).

Orpik appears out

Washington will likely be without Brooks Orpik tonight after the defenceman sat out the morning skate.

Orpik hasn't played since Philly's Ryan White hit him into the boards in Game 3. Orpik had to be helped off the ice, and the team said he sustained an upper-body injury.

When asked today if Orpik suffered a concussion, Capitals coach Barry Trotz said, "I'm not going to answer that."

It's been a rough series between the Metro division rivals. Flyers forward Scott Laughton was taken off the ice on a stretcher in Game 4 after a hit by the Caps' John Carlson sent him into the boards. Laughton was released from hospital yesterday but did not make the trip to Washington.
