Vanessa Hudgens puts on a brave face as she transforms into Rizzo for Grease: Live... hours after father's death

Just hours after her father passed away, Vanessa Hudgens braved cameras for Fox's TV musical revival Grease: Live.

The 27-year-old actress gave it her all, putting on a fabulously feisty performance as Rizzo, leader of the Pink Ladies, sporting a mop of curly dark locks, bold red lipstick and an attitude to match.

Despite some of the wettest conditions Los Angeles has seen in weeks, the part-outdoor show went on with many of the stars and dancers clutching umbrellas on set as the show opened.

Hudgens wowed with her performance, most notably when she donned a blonde wig - on top of her brunette one - to sing Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee while jumping around in Frenchy's bedroom.

Producers kept the musical true to the 1978 classic, which starred Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, just making some tweaks here and there.

Meanwhile, Julianne Hough was perfect as sweet-natured Sandy and was seen in a white blouse and powder blue circle skirt with white ribbon in her hair as the show kicked off.

Unlike the original, some of the key action took place inside an indoor gym instead of Rydell High's sports grounds and bleachers.

Most notably the scene where Rizzo reveals to Danny that his summer romance is now a student at their school.

'That's cool baby, you know how it is' Tveit, 32, reenacted phony Danny's reaction as Sandy watched with him with hurt and disappointment.

The actress tweeted the sad news but vowed to still perform as planned, in tribute to her father, a former firefighter.

'I am so sad to say that last night my daddy, Greg passed away from stage 4 cancer,' she wrote on Sunday morning. 'Thank you to everyone who kept him in your prayers.'

'Tonight, I do the show in his honor.'

The High School Musical star first revealed her father's battle with cancer last August, while accepting an award at the 2015 Industry Dance Awards.

She said at the time: 'Last year, my boyfriend, Austin [Butler], lost his mom, Lori, to cancer, and my dad has just been recently diagnosed with stage four cancer.

'Let me tell you, I hate cancer. I hate cancer with every cell of my being.

'This award, it means a lot to me, but I dedicate it to my boyfriend’s mom, Lori, my dad, and to all the families out there who are struggling with this, because it really takes a strong person and a strong family to be able to help those out who are going through this.'

Grease Live producers also vowed to continue with filming as planned,  despite forecasts for rain and possible thunder in Los Angeles, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

'We're going live rain or shine and we're excited to do so,' said producer Mark Platt, who added that show bosses had planned for the possibility of rain after reading about El Nino forecasts.

'That’s what makes live TV exciting, the unknown,' he said of the three-hour musical. 'So we're going for it.'
