Lady Gaga has revealed the torment her late aunt Joanne Germanotta endured after being sexually assaulted as a college student.
The 29-year-old singer appeared candid at the Producers Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday night as she shared the personal significance of her Oscar nominated ballad Til It Happens to You
‘It's not only an important issue to me, but it's an important issue to my family because when my father's sister was in college, she was sexually assaulted,’ Gaga said, according to People magazine.
‘Then, it tormented her so emotionally that it caused the lupus that she had to get so bad that she died.'

Gaga's real name is Stefani Joanne Germanotta, a tribute to her aunt, who died aged just 19 in 1974. Gaga also suffers from the autoimmune disease lupus.
She continued: ‘My father was 16, and it affected my family really tremendously my whole life. That's one of the centerpieces of our family. So this song means so much to me and so much to my parents.’

The pop star looked stunning in a cream coloured sleeveless gown with black spaghetti straps.
She performed on the piano with her long blonde hair down while accessorising with a sparkling necklace and dangling earrings.
Gaga's song is accompanied by a harrowing music video showing four women being sexually assaulted.

It's aimed at exposing the rape crimes sweeping US college campuses.
The pop provocateur does not appear in the black-and-white clip but sings the song, Till It Happens To You, written by Oscar-winning powerhouse Diane Warren.
The video was written and shot by director Catherine Hardwicke and features actress Nikki Reed as one of the victims. The two are longtime collaborators, having worked together on the films Thirteen in 2003 and Twilight in 2008.
Till It Happens To You begins with the disclaimer: 'The following contains graphic content that may be emotionally unsettling but reflects the reality of what is happening daily on college campuses.'

As the distressing scenes play out, Gaga sings: 'Till your world burns and crashes / Till you're at the end, the end of your rope / Till you're standing in my shoes / I don't wanna hear a thing or two from you, from you, from you.'
The video concludes with the victims understanding that the best way to survive their assaults is to speak to other and offer support.
Gaga dedicated the video to all victims of sexual assault as she performed at the awards at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in the Century City area.

The Big Short took home the top award on the night as its producers Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
Pitt, 52, did not attend the ceremony so the award was accepted by Gardner and Kleiner.
The Big Short with its win became a frontrunner at the upcoming Oscars where it has been nominated for Best Picture.

The PGA last year awarded Birdman with its top film prize and it went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars.
It was the eighth straight year that the winner of the PGA also won the Oscar.
The awards ceremony also featured onstage appearances by Amanda Seyfried, America Ferrara, Viola Davis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Frances Fisher, Cheryl Hines and Sarah Paulson.
Shonda Rhimes also took to the stage to accept the Norman Lear Achievement Award.

Other big winners included Game Of Thrones and its season five producers who won the Norman Felton Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Drama.
The award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures went to Inside Out producer Jonas Rivera.
James Gay-Rees won the award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures for the documentary Amy that examined the life of the late singer Amy Winehouse.
Anthony Anderson, 45, of the ABC sitcom Black-ish presented the award for Outstanding Producer of Live Entertainment & Talk Television.

The award went to the producers of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver and Anderson accepted on behalf of the producers.
'I’ll probably be the only brother up here tonight and in February getting a trophy,' Anderson quipped as he accepted the gong, according to Deadline.
Benecio del Toro, Gary Oldman and JJ Abrams also spoke onstage.
