How Canadian NHL teams fared yesterday

Five Canadian NHL teams were in action on Saturday. Here's a quick look at how they fared:

Canadiens notch much-needed win over Maple Leafs

The Montreal Canadiens won 3-2 in a five-round shootout over their long-time rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Max Pacioretty and Lars Eller scored for the Canadiens in the shootout to give the struggling club a much-needed win.

The Canadiens held a 2-0 lead after the first but the Leafs cut the lead to one in the second then tied the game early in the third.

The win ends a five-game losing streak for the Canadiens.

Early start, poor finish for Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks built up a 3-1 lead against the Pittsburgh Penguins in a meeting that began at 12:30 p.m. ET and would be breakfast hour on the west coast. 

However, the host Penguins awoke with a trio of goals in the final frame to notch a 5-4 victory. 

Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin and Vancouver's Jannik Hansen each recorded a hat trick.

Oilers feasted on by Predators

Mattias Ekholm scored twice to lead the Nashville Predators to the team's second win over the Edmonton Oilers in as many games this season. The final result was a 4-1 win after an empty-netter from Filip Forsberg in the final minute.

Edmonton's only goal came from Leon Draisaitl in the first period.

The Oilers have lost three straight and begin a nine-day break.

Devil of a game for Jets

Lee Stempniak scored a pair of goals and Corey Schneider made 22 saves to lead the New Jersey Devils 3-1 over the Winnipeg Jets. 

The lone goal for Winnipeg came from Dustin Byfuglien on a power play late in the contest.
