The 10 best special interest holidays for 2016

Not all holidays are centred on perfecting the art of doing nothing. Others are geared towards making the most of your time off by developing a new skill or an existing hobby. Such holidays come with different degrees of flexibility: choose to dip into a subject for a few hours or opt to immerse yourself completely in an activity, whether it be painting or choral singing. Many include time to explore the destination and its surrounding areas. Below I've picked out the 10 best special interest holidays - all are new for 2016, have high quality guides or tutors and strong programmes. The artistic director of the BBC National Chorus of Wales is the guide on a choral singing tour to Andalusia while broadcaster and gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh leads a gardens tour to Holland. Other holidays such as painting in Malta, bird-watching in Champagne, fly-fishing in Argentina and sketching in Morocco include day excursions and special experiences. A ballroom dancing tour to Tenerife offers a structured programme that includes daily dance instruction and evening practice sessions. Three tours coincide with cultural festivals: a steam train festival in northern France, flower festivals in Japan and the biggest Indian religious festival in the world, the Kumbh Mela, where a former BBC photographer is on hand to help you compose — and capture — inspiring photographs.

The Baie de Somme, a Grand Site de France, plays host to some of the finest steam locomotives, including trains, tractors, buses, steamrollers and steam-powered saw-mills. Watch the steam trains trundle across the middle of the Bay among reeds, willows, and the foreshore.
