'Lena will be undergoing surgery at an undisclosed hospital. We thank you for you understanding and hope that Lena's privacy will be respected.'

Endometriosis is a painful disorder in which the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of it. The disease affects more than 200,000 women in the US per year.

The Girls creator has documented her struggles with endometriosis and said last month that she was unable to do press for the new season of her show.

'As many of you know I have endometriosis, a chronic condition that affects approximately 1 in 10 women's reproductive health,' she shared.

'I am currently going through a rough patch with the illness and my body (along with my amazing doctors) let me know, in no uncertain terms, that it's time to rest.'

Lena added: 'So many women with this disease literally don't have the option of time off and I won't take it for granted.'

The star appeared to be feeling in better health a couple of weeks later, when she thanked fans for their support on Instagram.

'Thank you all so much for the support over the last few weeks,' Lena shared. 'I cannot even begin to express how much good your generosity has done for my body/soul.

'I've met so many amazing sisters (and bros!) in arms through what some might label my "over-sharing" and it has healed me in a multitude of ways.'

A day before she was taken to hospital, the actress and writer recommended products on Instagram to other sufferers of the disorder.

Lena said that she has 'had to totally reboot my product cabinet, to protect myself from impossible to pronounce chemicals that worsen my symptoms,' advising fans to try out Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop range or the more affordable Mad Hippie products.
