You can get 2GB of extra free storage from Google again this year

Google is once again giving users an extra free 2GB of extra storage online if they complete a security check today, Safer Internet Day.

Google had a similar promotion last year, when it launched its new security checkup tool.

To claim the reward, which can be used for combined Gmail, Google Plus and Google Drive storage, users need to go to the security check-up website (if it doesn't pop up automatically) and check:

  • The phone number, email address and security question that Google will use to get in touch if there's "unusual" activity with your account or if you get locked out.
  • What devices have been connecting to your account.
  • What apps you have given permission to access your Google account.

The check takes only a couple of minutes.

While Google promoted the reward in a blog post last year, this year it's just letting people know with a message after they complete the security check.

Google Security Check

'To help celebrate Safer Internet Day 2016, we added 2 GB of free Drive storage to your Google account because you completed the Security Checkup,' Google says after you complete the check.

Even people who completed the security check last year can get an extra 2GB added to what they already have. Normally, free Google accounts come with 15 GB of storage for email, files, and Google Plus posts.

Google did not say how long the promotion would be in effect. Last year, users had until Feb. 17.

You can also already get unlimited free photo and video storage through Google Photos, with some conditions. And, of course, you can always get an extra 15 GB by starting a new account, or by using other free online storage options online.

Most services, including Google, also allow you to pay a monthly fee for extra storage.

Safer Internet Day, held annually around the world, aims to raise awareness about online safety issues such as cyberbullying. It's organized by Insafe, a European network of groups that run public awareness and educational campaigns about internet safety.
