Lena Dunham thanks fans for their support after cancelling Girls promo tour

She took to Instagram to announce she wouldn't be appearing at any press for the upcoming fifth season of HBO series Girls due to her struggles with endometriosis.

And on Saturday Lena Dunham shared that she is feeling much better, in large part to the good will and warm wishes she has received from her fans, following her 'over sharing.'

The 29-year-old posted a sweet note of thanks on her Instagram account for her fans ahead of Sunday's premiere of her hit show after she was spotted looking in good health while out and about in New York City.

Lena wore a fitted black top underneath a long, leopard print jacket embellished with large, decorative buttons.

She also sported form-fitting black trousers with gold zippers along the bottom, and a pair of brown suede heels.

She kept her look natural for the outing, appearing to go make-up free as she clutched a book to her chest, perhaps her best-selling work, Not That Kind Of Girl.

She kept warm for the outing with a stylish, maroon knit beanie, which was worn over her short, brown tresses.

The Not That Kind of Girl author accessorized her look with a chic, black leather purse with a gold chain.

Lena shared a selfie in which she could see the Girls season five ad displayed on a nearby passing bus from her car window.

She captioned the snap: 'Thank you all so much for the support over the last few weeks. I cannot even begin to express how much good your generosity has done for my body/soul.'

'I've met so many amazing sisters (and bros!) in arms through what some might label my "over-sharing" and it has healed me in a multitude of ways.'

The star excitedly added that after long last, Sunday brings the season premiere of her hit series, at 10pm on HBO.

And, she noted, that as she stepped out on Saturday, feeling 'decidedly unglamorous' she spotted her Girls ad - which she said reminded her of Sex and the City - and it cheered her right up.

'I'm mending nicely and it's all your fault [heart emoji] love you like whoa, grateful too,' Lena concluded.

She had previously taken to Instagram to share news of her illness with her 2.3 million followers, as well as explain why she would not be promoting the HBO series.

'I am currently going through a rough patch with the illness and my body (along with my amazing doctors) let me know, in no uncertain terms, that it's time to rest,' she wrote on Instagram/Facebook.

'I'm lucky enough to have support and backup from Jenni, Judd and the whole Girls gang. So many women with this disease literally don't have the option of time off and I won't take it for granted.'

Lena's illness is a relatively common chronic condition in which the tissue lining the uterus grows elsewhere in the body, leading to severe pain and infertility.

She expressed her sympathy for missing promotion for the show, and noted that she found it difficult to just rest, though she was trying.

Meanwhile, she likely found solace in her longtime boyfriend Jack Antonoff of Bleachers, who celebrated Grammy wins for his work with Taylor Swift on album 1989 on Sunday.

'When you don't feel so hot and you're stuck in bed so your boyfriend comes in and plays the mandolin in ya face,' Lena wrote, alongside an Instagram post of Jack serenading her.

And the star seems to be feeling better in time for the premiere of her HBO series, which debuts on Sunday at 10pm.
