Old Navy rebuffs trolls, wins fans over ad with interracial family

Old Navy says it is proud to champion diversity after a sale advertisement tweet that depicted a interracial couple and a child brought some racist responses.

After the tweet appeared on April 29, some people criticized the apparel company, claiming it was promoting racial mixing. Some who responded negatively said they would boycott Old Navy stores.

However, those racist responses were met with a huge backlash on social media, including many people who posted their own images of interracial couples and families.

For its part, the company rebuffed the negative responses to its photograph.

In a statement to Fortune magazine, Old Navy spokesperson Debbie Feliex said: "We are a brand with a proud history of championing diversity and inclusion. At Old Navy, everyone is welcome."

The two adult models featured in the ad both weighed in.

"In light of the controversy revolving around my pretend family... I am proud to be representing interracial love, multiculturalism, and most importantly, a mentality that supports opportunity for all ethnicities," Grace Mahary said in a post on Instagram.

Clay Pollioni, the male model, said he was "extremely proud to have taken part in a campaign that not only celebrates our nation's diversity, but also unites families with multicultural backgrounds and promotes love of all kinds!

Since it was posted the original Old Navy tweet been retweeted and liked thousands of times. Tweets from the company typically attract only few dozen retweets and likes.
