Kate McKinnon kisses Paul Dano with a mouthful of ham during Spirit Awards 2016

There was bound to be mischievous antics at the Independent Spirit Awards with SNL favorite Kate McKinnon co-hosting.

And the comedian didn't disappoint during Saturday's ceremony and somehow persuaded Love & Mercy star Paul Dano to give her a smooch with a mouth full of ham.

To Dano's credit, he didn't flinch one bit, leaning in to the actress as she puckered up and even holding it for a lingering five seconds.

Awkwardly for all involved, Dano's girlfriend Zoe Kazan was sat right beside him as the love fest took place.

But the pretty blonde definitely saw the funny side ans couldn't stop giggling with her hands over her mouth.

Kate's co-host Kumail Nanjiani couldn't hide his surprise when he said dryly: 'I did not think that was how that was going to end'

The joke started when Kate, 32, sat in the audience pretending to be a fan of Anomalisa while sitting next to one of the movie's stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, eating from a bag of ham.

She then declared she needed to meet Dano, saying 'Where is that hunky sad-eyed sex machine?' and promptly hunted him down.

Members of Film Independent and IFP - which is made up of a community of filmmakers, film industry leaders, and film lovers - get to vote for the best of the past year's films and filmmakers.

Unlike the scandal surrounding the white-washed Oscars this year, there's no doubt the Independent Spirit Awards ticks the diversity box.
