Kaetlyn Osmond took the first step toward reclaiming her Canadian figure skating title.
The 20-year-old from Marystown, N.L., won the short program Friday at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, scoring 70.63 points despite an error on her jump combination.
Osmond broke her right fibula in two places in the fall of 2014, an injury that required two surgeries to repair and sidelined her all of last season.
The two-time Canadian champion had one misstep in her otherwise superb skate to Cyndi Lauper's "La Vie en Rose." She doubled her planned triple toe-loop, the second jump in a combination.
Alain Chartrand of Prescott, Ont., was second with a score of 68.81.
Later, three-time world champion Patrick Chan tries to reclaim his Canadian crown. The seven-time national champion took last season off.
