York's fight to keep city's tourism afloat as attractions remain under water

A number of roads in the city centre are still closed, with levels of the River Ouse and River Foss expected to remain high over the next few days. York City Council is advising motorists to avoid the city centre.

It has also issued a city centre evacuation plan to all central businesses.

For the third day, York Minster is opening its doors free of charge for “some peace amongst the flood chaos”.

The York Art Gallery, Yorkshire Museum and York Castle Museum have reopened after closing but are warning visitors to check travel updates and to take care.

But many of the city’s other attractions are closed.

The JORVIK Viking Centre, housed in a basement below Coppergate Shopping Centre, has been flooded and is under around 50cm of water.

Sarah Maltby, director of attractions for York Archaeological Trust, said trust members were devastated to find water leaking into the centre, which aims to recreate life in a typical Viking street.

"When we first became aware of water leaking into the basement, we immediately transported all of the historic artefacts within JORVIK up to the first floor, and they have now been moved off-site to a safe location," she said.

"However, around half of the attraction is currently submerged, with water under the raised floor upon which the remainder sits."

The centre will remain closed until further notice.

The situation in the city centre is changeable as flood waters recede and more roads are able to open, but visitors to check the York Travel website before planning their journey.

The York Dungeon in town is also closed until further notice. Those who have pre-booked tickets are able to claim a refund by contacting 0871 423 2260.

CityScreen cinema, on the banks of the Ouse in the centre, has said it is likely to be closed for a couple of days.

A number of pubs on the banks of the Ouse, including the King's Arms and the Lowther, renowned for flooding regularly, remain submerged under water.

Severe flood warnings remain in place across the city.

Flood levels have peaked in Leeds but residents and visitors are being warned to be vigilant. Leeds City Council is warning motorists, in particular, of travelling over Linton Bridge, which has been closed off as structurally unsound.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park in West Bretton, home to more than 100 sculptures, remains open, but staff are advising visitors to wear wellies.

Castle Howard, a country house 15 miles from York where Brideshead Revisited was filmed, was closed on Boxing Day due to waterlogged grounds, but has since reopened. It is urging any visitors to take care and wear wellies.

In the Lake District, which saw some of the worst flooding earlier in the month, Cumbria County Council is urging caution when travelling.

It said: "Please put safety first. If you are out walking or driving in Cumbria, please respect any closure signs for your own safety."
