Gino's Italian Escape - Islands in the Sun (ITV1, 8.00pm)

Gino D'Acampo arrives in Palermo, the capital city of Sicily, and a place he has never visited before. Home of the Mafia, this portside city immediately stops the italian chef in his tracks with its vibrant street food culture and fascinating history, Gino has an unexpected encounter at the food market, meets a man who stood up to the mob, and tries wine tasting in Marsala. He ends his day in a nearby vineyard, cooking a succulant chicken in marsala sauce.

Sunday December 6

Countryfile (BBC One, 6.20pm)

Ellie Harrison and Joe Crowley take a tour of some of Scotland's most remote scenic areas, visiting Britain's highest road, which runs 2,000 feet above sea level, meeting a couple who have made a new life as crofters, and discovering a fish that could solve all the salmon industry's problems.

Railway Walks (BBC Four, 7.30pm)

Julia Bradbury explores the streets of Weymouth as she begins to trace the route of a short Dorset line that once ran south from the town and across Chesil Beach and Portland. In the second programme, she begins the longest walk yet, a journey through the Highlands over territory with a history of clan conflict and links with folk hero Rob Roy. Repeat.

Las Vegas with Trevor McDonald (ITV1, 9.00pm)

The broadcaster explores the American city, meeting some of its 1.3million inhabitants as well as people who have won and lost big in the casinos. Trevor McDonald begins by visiting former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in his mansion hidden away in a gated community in the desert hills, where the boxer reveals how he is trying to build a life as a father and a husband after a turbulent past that saw him end up bankrupt. He also tags along with veteran bail agent Jon Foster to hunt down a fugitive.

Tuesday December 8

Blood and Gold: The Making of Spain with Simon Sebag Montefiore (BBC Four, 9.00pm)

Historian and author Simon Sebag Montefiore turns his attention to Spain, taking a 2,000 year journey from when Iberia was a minor province of Carthage to later more glorious days. Beginning in Cadiz, Montefiore learns of the country’s first invaders, sees where Hannibal received the “blessing of the Gods”, tells how Spain became “a battleground for empires” and explains the impact of the Visigoths and the Muslim invasion.

Thursday December 10

Alex Polizzi's Italian Islands (Five, 8.00pm)

Alex Polizzi continues her tour with a visit to the north of Sicily, revealing a different side to the largest island in the Mediterranean. She discovers overwhelming opulence at a palace in Palermo, meets an inspirational mayor and viewing an army of mummified monks who are giving scientists new insights into island life in the past. She also learns how the Mafia have influenced Sicilian life for decades from a group of locals determined to bring about change.

Life of a Mountain: A Year on Scafell Pike (BBC Four, 8.00pm)

Documentary charting life on England's highest peak through the seasons, and highlighting the importance of maintaining the landscape for future generations. Repeat.

Friday December 11

Gino's Italian Escape (ITV1, 8.00pm)

Chef Gino D'Acampo explains how Sicily's fascinating history has influenced the food its people eat and the ingredients they use. Crossing the island and taking in the beautiful baroque towns of Noto and Modica, Gino learns about chocolate and cassada. Travelling past the temples of Agrigento, he makes his way up to the foothills of Mount Etna, heading to Sicily's lemon riviera, and makes a sumptuous lemon risotto in a lemon grove.
