E.T. screenwriter Melissa Mathison leaves $22m fortune... but original copy of her will cannot be found

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial screenwriter Melissa Mathison left a $22 million fortune when she passed away in November.

But no-one can find the original copy of her will, reports TMZ.

The website revealed that her business manager did not have the document, nor was it among her legal papers.

Mathison, who had cancer and died aged 65 on November 4, did write a will and her money is in a trust.

The lack of the original will shouldn't be a problem since in California a copy is acceptable - unless there is a battle over the estate.

However, since the original is not among the legal documents, it is not yet known who stands to inherit.

While the will remains private, the main beneficiaries are likely to be her two children with Ford - son Malcolm, a musician who was born in 1987, and daughter Georgia, an actress who was born in 1990.

Costly split: Mathison wed Hollywood star Harrison Ford in 1983 and received $85 million following their 2004 divorce, including royalties from films the actor made during their marriage. They're pictured in 1998

Mathison, who coined the immortal line: 'E.T. phone home,' was married to Hollywood star Ford from 1983 to 2004.

Following a lengthy legal battle, she eventually walked away from the marriage with at least $85 million, making it one of the biggest and costliest celebrity splits in history.

As part of the settlement, she won the right to a percentage of royalties from the Indiana Jones and Star Wars star's films made during their marriage.

Those movies included blockbusters such as Patriot Games, Presumed Innocent, two Indiana Jones films, The Fugitive and Air Force One.

Following the divorce, Ford, now 73, developed a relationship with Ally McBeal actress Calista Flockhart in 2002 and they wed in 2010.

Mathison never remarried.

Before she died, she completed the screenplay for Stephen Spielberg's big screen adaptation of Roald Dahl's children's book The Big Friendly Giant.

The movie, starring Rebecca Hall and Mark Rylance, is set for release in July 2016.

Upon hearing the news of her death, Spielberg paid tribute to Mathison.

'Melissa had a heart that shined with generosity and love and burned as bright as the heart she gave E.T.,' the famous director said.

Never wed again: Mathison is pictured with Ford at the London premiere of E.T. in 1982. They married the following year. The Star Wars star is now married to actress Calista Flockhart but Mathison never remarried
