Detroit Zoo to be powered only by energy generated by wind

The Detroit Zoo says it will fully power its operations with renewable energy generated by wind farms.

The zoo in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak announced the plans Monday as part of its broader efforts to be more environmentally sustainable.

The power from the purchase of renewable energy credits by the Detroit Zoological Society is supported by Novi-based electricity transmission company ITC Holdings Corp.

Other zoo initiatives include discontinuing the sale of bottled water and building a biodigester to turn animal manure into energy.

The DZS Greenprint strategic plan outlines efforts at the Detroit Zoo and the Belle Isle Nature Zoo to incorporate sustainability in all policies and programs. Education efforts by the Detroit Zoological Society also are part the zoo's efforts to be greener.
