BP has ordered the evacuation of workers from a North Sea oilfield due to an unmanned barge drifting towards a drilling platform in rough seas.
The British group said 71 people remained in the Valhall oilfield this morning, following the evacuation of 150 workers earlier. BP has now ordered a complete evacuation of the field after failing to regain control of the barge, which had broken free of its anchor in a storm.
“The barge has changed direction and BP has decided to shut production [at Valhall] and there will be a total demanning of the platform. There are 71 people left on the platform and they are being evacuated as we speak,” a BP spokesman told Reuters.
The spokesman said a tug boat had been trying to gain control of the barge, which started drifting amid strong winds and high waves late on Wednesday.
Earlier, Norway’s Statoil said one worker was killed and two were injured when a big wave slammed into a drilling rig on Wednesday in the Troll field, also in the North Sea. Most workers were evacuated from the rig as it headed to shore under its own power.
