The Canadian Olympic Committee has chosen four-time Olympian Tricia Smith as its new president.

She was named the COC's interim president when Marcel Aubut stepped down on Oct. 3, and will finish his term, which ends April 2017.

Upon her election Smith said, "It's an honour I accept with pride and gratitude at a time when the eyes of the country are upon us."

Members of Team Canada past and present tweet their support for the newly elected president.

Fellow order of Canada recipient and five-time Olympian in athletics Charmaine Crooks tweeted her support.

Former summer and winter Olympian Clara Hughes was also a fan of the news.

Cassie Campbell, double Olympic gold medallist and former captain of the Canadian women's hockey team, took time away from celebrating her birthday to congratulate Smith.

Canadian national swim team member and Rio 2016 hopeful Tera Van Beilen is optimistic about the future of Team Canada due to the decision.

And finally, Carla Qualtrough, Canada's new minister for sport and persons with a disability, made sure to congratulate Smith.
